Minors in Education (Professional Training Option)
About the Program
The Professional Training Option (PTO) in the College of Education is an approved program of the Florida Department of Education for Arts and Sciences majors interested in teaching middle or high school in one of the following three areas: biological science, social science, or English.
To be eligible, students need to meet the following three requirements:
- major in Environmental Science (Biological Sciences), Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, English, or Journalism;
- earn 21 credits in one of these majors with 12 of the credits earned at USF St. Petersburg, and
- have and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA or higher throughout the course sequence of the PTO.

Courses:

- RED 5240 Foundations of Differentiated Reading Instruction (3) or EDG 4909 Just Read Florida***

- EDG 4909 Measurement Concepts and Assessment of All Students (4)
- EEX 4070 Integrating the Exceptional Student in the Regular Classroom (3)
Exit Requirement Courses: It is strongly suggested that all students who wish to add the Professional Training Option (PTO) take EDF 3604 Social Foundations of Education (3) to fulfill an Exit Requirement in their major. For the English PTO, it strongly suggested that students take also LAE 4464 Adolescent Literature for Middle and Secondary Students (3) as an Exit Requirement.
**To be eligible for EDG 4943, Practicum in Secondary Education, all students in the PTO will need to be fingerprinted and have a background check through the Pinellas County School District before registering for the Practicum. This process takes at least 6 weeks. Fingerprinting is a state requirement for all practicum students in the public schools. Students must also take and pass all sections of the General Knowledge Test of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam to enroll in EDG 4943 Practicum in Secondary Education.
