English Proficiency

You must prove that you are proficient in English to apply to USF. Here are the ways you can prove you are proficient as a First Time in College student:

  • You are from an English speaking country. You may apply to USF without submitting TOEFL scores if you are from one of these English speaking countries:

    Antigua and Barbuda
    Australia
    Bahamas
    Bahrain
    Barbados
    Belize
    Bermuda
    Botswana
    Canada (unless French is native language)
    Dominica
    Fiji
    Ghana
    Grenada
    Guyana
    Ireland
    Jamaica
    Kenya
    Lesotho
    Liberia
    Malawi
    New Zealand
    Nigeria
    Sierra Leone
    South Africa (unless Afrikaans is native language)
    St. Kitts & Nevis
    St. Lucia
    St. Vincent & Grenadines
    Swaziland
    Tanzania
    Trinidad and Tobago
    Uganda
    United Kingdom
    United Kingdom Overseas Territories
    Zambia
    Zimbabwe

    Or,
  • You earned a score of 550 or higher on the written TOEFL test, in the last two years, or

  • You earned a score of 213 or higher on the computer TOEFL test, in the last two years, or

 

  • You earned a score of 79 or higher on the internet TOEFL test, in the last two years, or

  • You have a score of 440 or higher on the verbal section of the SAT exam, or

  • You have a score of 17 or higher for English and a score of 18 or higher for Reading on the ACT exam, or

  • You are dual enrolled at a university or college and are taking college level English, or

  • You sat for the British General Certificate Secondary Examination (GCSE) or Caribbean Examination Certificate (CXC).
